Community Helper Visit

We had a special visit from a community helper today!  Danielle Sullivan (Mrs. Sullivan's daughter-in-law) is a nurse and talked a lot about her job and how she helps people.  She showed us a lot of the things she uses as part of her job and gave some helpful safety tips for the summer.  She also shared some great books about being a nurse and gave everyone stickers!  It was a great way for us to kick-off our short unit on community helpers!

Recycled Water Bottle Projects

We have been learning about recycling this week and how we can reduce the amount of trash that is piling up in our landfills.  Each student was given a water bottle with the challenge of turning it into something useful.  The students were very creative and turned them into bird feeders, planters, vases, and piggy banks!  They did a great job!  I'm hoping their creations can be put to good use in your homes!

Push and Pull Forces of Motion

We started a short unit on Forces of Motion today!  The students enjoyed making predictions and experimenting with Newton's cradle.  We talked a lot about things we can push and pull at home and at school (dresser drawers, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, chairs, wagons, etc.).  They also explored questions such as "What makes things move?" and "Why do things move?" by using stomp rockets and having a shuttle board competition.  It certainly was a fun way to end such a busy week!

June 15, 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We had a super busy and very exciting week!

On Monday, we participated in a science engineering project with Mr. Musselman where students built structures to protect a popsicle from melting in the sun.  They did a great job working together in groups to build different shade structures.

We wrote a lot of thank you notes this week.  We made a list of all the people who have helped us this year in Kindergarten and were amazed at how many people there were!  There is an enormous team that works together to help make each student here at Francis Wyman successful!

A lot of the students’ artwork will start coming home next week, especially after our Cleaning Day on Tuesday.  I saved the students’ self portraits from the beginning of the year and had them draw new self portraits more recently.  I think a lot of you will be amazed at your child’s progress!

Our Field Day will be this Thursday (with a rain date on Friday).  We will be participating in a variety of activities outside on the back field.  Water bottles were sent home yesterday that can be washed and filled for Field Day.  Students are welcome to use the water bottles before then too but they are encouraged to bring them or another water bottle for Field Day.

We will be walking to Simonds Park on Monday, June 25th.  More information about the trip will go home on Friday.  We will provide pizza and drinks and children will be dismissed from the park.  You are welcome to either walk with us or join us at the park.  We will be leaving the school around 9:30am.  Children may wear their green field trip shirts if they would like.

Our last day of school will be Tuesday, June 26th.  Dismissal will be around 11:15am.  I sent a form home earlier this week.  Please be sure to fill it out and send it back as soon as possible so we know where your child will go that day.  Thanks!

I want to wish all of you wonderful fathers a very Happy Father’s Day.  Thank you for all you do every day for your children and families.

Have a great weekend!

Melanie

PS...If your child will not be here on the last day of school, please let me know so I can send some of their work home ahead of time.  Thanks!

3-D Map of Boston

We finally finished it and it looks amazing!  The students have been working hard to make a 3-D map of the area around the Boston Common and State House where we went for our field trip.  We read "Make Way for Ducklings" by Robert McCloskey and made sure we included all of the important places from the book on our map, including Beacon Street, the State House, Louisburg Square, the Charles River, Mt. Vernon Street, Charles Street, and the Public Garden where the Swan Boats are.  We talked a lot about other important places in Boston and included them on our map, including hospitals, restaurants, a library and museum, a bank, hotels and apartments, a movie theater, grocery store, and even a barber shop!  The students worked hard to add details such as traffic lights, stop signs, the carousel, a playground, street lights, weeping willow trees, the statues of the ducklings, and so much more!  They felt very proud to show Mrs. McDonald and Mr. D. all their hard work!
