Dear Parents,
We have had a busy first week of June! It’s hard to believe there are only 11 1/2 days left! The students are still working on their narratives. Most of them finished the stories they were working on last week and have started new stories. They have also started making a book where they write about some of the special things we did each month. We all enjoyed writing letters for Wee Deliver this week. If possible, please encourage your child to write/send mail to family and friends (outside of school) to help extend what they have been doing this week!
We did a short unit on how plants and animals change their environment. The students wrote about different examples. A few examples include: Animals dig holes in the ground to live in. Termites build mounds/hills to live in. Plant roots break concrete side walks as they grow. Beavers cut down trees to make their homes.
The students worked more on our 3D map of Boston. They have been adding buildings and street signs and even swan boats, play structures, street lamps, a merry-go-round, and the gold dome on the State House! They enjoy being creative and are doing a great job! We only have a few more things to add before it is complete. I will be sure to post pictures of the completed map next week!
We did an experiment with melting ice this week. We put ice cubes in the sun and shade to compare which ones melted quicker. We will be building shade structures on Monday to “protect the popsicles.”
Miss Amanda visited our school this week to talk about the summer reading program at the Burlington Public Library. A brochure went home earlier this week with more details.
We will be going to the library for the last time this Wednesday, June 13. Please be sure to look for and return your child’s library book. Our school librarian said she will allow students to borrow a library book over the summer if parents agree and feel like they would like to have a book for summer reading. I know some parents don’t want their child to borrow a book over the summer. If you would like your child to borrow a book to keep over the summer and return it in the fall, please let me know.
The students will be participating in a Cleaning Day on Tuesday, June 19th. They will be helping to clean and organize different things in our classroom. I already have two parents signed up to help that day. If you are interested in helping out as well, just let me know. The volunteer time that day is 9:30-10:20am.
We will be walking to Simonds Park on Monday, June 25th. We will be leaving school around 9:30am (weather permitting) to walk to the park. Crossing guards will be with us along the way to safely cross us at strategic points. Parents are welcome to join us at the park. We would like a few parents to walk up with us (just let us know). The children will be dismissed from the park. Children who attend the After School Program will take a bus back to school. If you plan on taking your child home from the park, it is very important that you tell us you are taking your child. We will be sending more info home later regarding lunches and other details. Pizza will be provided for students unless you would rather send a lunch. NO BACKPACKS are needed that day. Students should wear sneakers and sunscreen. Students will NOT be going in the pool.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Melanie Duncan
