Welcome to Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a very special experience for children.  We strive to create a child-centered, hands-on, responsive classroom where the children feel safe and are encouraged to become risk takers and decision makers.  Our main goal is to foster a love of learning and to promote positive self-esteem amongst our students.

Procedures:

Kindergarten Hours: 8:10am – 12:45pm (Students can be dropped off between 7:55 and 8:10am)

Lunch:  The children will be having lunch at school.  They may bring their own (be sure to label their lunch box), buy milk ($.60), or lunch, which also includes milk ($3.00).  Student accounts need to be set up prior to the start of school.  This can be done on www.paypams.com.  You can pay for lunches online or send in a check made out to Burlington School Lunch Program.  Cash will not be accepted.  Students will use a lunch card to purchase their lunches.  These cards will be kept at school.  Please discuss with your child what he/she will be eating for lunch before they go to school.  Lunch is from 10:45-11:10.

Snack:  Snack is not provided.  Parents are responsible for providing a snack each day.  All snack items must be nut-free.  Students are allowed to eat nuts at lunchtime, though.  We will be eating snack around 9:30am every day.

Field Trip Shirts:  We will all wear special t-shirts when we go on field trips. Each class has a different color.  Please send in $5 to cover the cost of the shirt.  If you are paying by check, please make it out to Francis Wyman Kindergarten.  There are no other supplies needed for Kindergarten.

Field Trips: We go on many field trips.  One permission slip, which is kept on file, is used for all field trips.  Parents are asked to pay per field trip.  Notices will be sent out for each trip.  These checks should be made payable to Francis Wyman Kindergarten.

Birthdays:  We are unable to celebrate birthdays with food but we will sing a special birthday song and give a special birthday pencil when it is your child’s birthday.  We will also be unable to distribute party invitations.  All invitations will need to be mailed directly to student homes.

Allergies:  Please let me know if your child has any allergies or any other health concerns.

Backpacks:  A backpack is a must!  Children will have important notices as well as projects to bring home.  Make sure it is not too small.  Don't forget to check their packs and folders daily.

Toys:  Please leave all toys, including stuffed animals, dolls, fidget spinners, Pokemon cards, etc. at home.  They tend to be very distracting and often get lost or misplaced.

Clothing:  Your children will be doing some pretty messy projects with paint, glitter, glue, etc.  We provide smocks for your children, but they sometimes forget to put them on…so please make sure their clothing fits into our very hands-on environment.  Feel free to send a change of clothes (labeled with your child’s name) in a bag that can stay at school if you think they may need one.

Transportation:  Your child will go home on the Kindergarten bus unless he/she attends an after school program.  If your child's transportation home is to be different (i.e. pick-up by parents or others, bus to a friend's house, different stop, etc.), please send in a note or leave a phone message to inform us.  Unless we have a note or a phone message, your child will go home on his/her usual bus.

Parent volunteers: We have parent volunteers in our classroom daily and chaperones for our field trips.  All parents who volunteer in school, either in the classroom or as a chaperone, must have a CORI check.  This is done at Central Administration located at the Burlington High School.  Each CORI is good for three years.   No parent will be allowed to volunteer without the CORI.  All volunteers will also have to attend a mandatory Principal’s Confidentiality Meeting with Mrs. McDonald.  There will be a meeting after the Open House on Tuesday, September 19th and more scheduled throughout the year.

Teacher contact: If you need to contact me at any time, just send in a note or call me at school at 781-238-6854.  You can also contact me by e-mail:  Duncan@bpsk12.org.  Conferences will be scheduled a couple of times during the year but can be set up informally if there are ever any questions or concerns.

Please cc. Mrs. Sullivan with important emails such as transportation changes or other urgent messages to ensure that we both are updated, especially if one of us happens to be absent from school.  Her email address is MarySullivan@bpsk12.org.

I am looking forward to a great year working with you and your child!  Thanks in advance for all your support!

Melanie Duncan
