June 1, 2018 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We had a busy and exciting week in Room 115!  Please check out some of my previous posts to learn more about our Listening Walk and field trip to Boston to ride on the Swan Boats.

The students did a lot of writing this week.  They have been working on their narrative pieces and did more journal writing too.  They will start writing about their year in Kindergarten next week. We have also been learning and writing about how plants and animals change our environment.

They continued working on our 3D map of the area in Boston we visited on our field trip.  They painted the area that includes Beacon Hill and the Public Garden and made buildings that can be found in Boston.  They have also started making trees, stop signs, playgrounds, and other things we saw in the Public Garden area...even the statues of all the ducklings!  I want to say a special thank you to the parents who have helped with this project so far!  I will be sure to post pictures of the completed map when it is finished.

We did our first Step Up to First Grade math lesson today.  These lessons are to give you and your child an idea of what to expect in first grade.  Please take a peek at them when they come home.  We may or may not finish the lesson at school.  They do not need to be returned.

Our school will be participating in our school wide mail system, Wee Deliver, next week.  The third graders will sort and distribute letters to students and teachers.  Our class will be writing letters to siblings, neighbors, and friends.  If you would like to particpate by writing a letter to your child, please be sure to include our mailing address (115 Duckling Drive, Burlington, MA 01803) and a stamp (not a real one….it can be a sticker or a drawing).  You can “mail” them outside our main office in a special mail box or send them to school in your child’s folder.

The students will be participating in a Cleaning Day on Tuesday, June 19th.  They will be helping to clean and organize different things in our classroom.  I already have two parents signed up to help that day.  If you are interested in helping out as well, just let me know.  The volunteer time that day is 9:30-10:20am.

We will be walking to Simonds Park on Monday, June 25th.  We will be leaving school around 9:30am (weather permitting) to walk to the park.  Crossing guards will be with us along the way to safely cross us at strategic points.  Parents are welcome to join us at the park.  We would like a few parents to walk up with us (just let us know).  The children will be dismissed from the park.  Children who attend the After School Program will take a bus back to school.  If you plan on taking your child home from the park, it is very important that you tell us you are taking your child.  We will be sending more info home later regarding lunches and other details.  Pizza will be provided for students unless you would rather send a lunch.  NO BACKPACKS are needed that day.  Students should wear sneakers and sunscreen.  Students will NOT be going in the pool.

We will be working on a special science engineering project in a couple of weeks with Mr. Musselman from the Science Center.  We will need empty toilet paper tubes and the top of pizza boxes (not the bottom soiled part).  If you have some, please send them in anytime next week.  We could also use some drink containers (water bottles, milk cartons, juice boxes, etc.) for another art/science project coming up.  Thanks!

We will also do a special experiment with melting ice next week.  In preparation for this experiment, we will read a book called “Making Juice Pops.”  If you would like to try making juice pops this weekend, here are the steps:

  • Place small paper cups on a tray and fill them with juice.
  • Put the cups of juice in the freezer for one hour.
  • Place a craft/popsicle stick (or plastic spoon) in the center of each cup and put them back in the freezer.
  • Freeze for five hours and then remove from the freezer.  Hold the stick and twist the cup off the solid juice pop.
  • Enjoy the juice pop!  See what happens if the juice pop sits out of the freezer for a while!

Our last Scholastic Book Order form went home today.  It’s a great opportunity to get some books for this summer.  If you would like to order, please try to do so by this Thursday, June 7th.  You are also welcome to shop for books at the final FW Used Book Store in the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 13th.  Parents/students are welcome to buy books for $0.50 or bring books to trade.

We will be going to the library for the last time on Wednesday, June 13.  Please be sure to look for and return your child’s library book.  Our school librarian said she will allow students to borrow a library book over the summer if parents agree and feel like they would like to have a book for summer reading.  I know some parents don’t want their child to borrow a book over the summer.  If you would like your child to borrow a book to keep over the summer and return it in the fall, please let me know.

Have a great weekend!

Melanie Duncan
